Agisters, breeders, veterinarians, groomers, and other kennel operators may attempt to enforce a lien against your companion animal. At best, they may refuse to return her until the bill is paid, charging modest fees for boarding. At worst, they may euthanize or sell her to a third-party research institution, rendering plant, or innocent purchaser. Many animal care providers either violate the existing laws or act outside of the law in withholding nonhuman animals.
Consult an animal law attorney to determine how to protect a nonhuman animal from unnecessary harm arising out of a contractual dispute, or how to comply with notice and ethical requirements before exercising lienholder’s rights.
